RE: MEC Joemat-Pettersson ends Imbizo Focus Week with Agri-Bee Consultation

29 September 2004

The Northern Cape's MEC for Agriculture and Land Reform Tina Joemat-Pettersson is to address a wide range of agricultural stakeholders on the Agri-BEE framework in Upington tomorrow morning. Agricultural Minister Thoko Didiza has appointed a steering committee that will undertake consultations in all provinces. The committee is expected to report on inputs and comments to the Minister in November. The document will then be place before Cabinet by Minister Didiza for adoption in line with Section 12 of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003.

MEC Joemat-Pettersson will be launching the framework in an effort to solicit comments from farmer unions, farm labourer unions, agri-businesses and other interested structures. Representatives from ABSA, Orange River Wine Cellars, Land Bank and Standard Bank will deliver message of support towards the Agri-BEE framework. These institutions are also sponsoring the launch activity.

The draft Agri-BEE document seeks to bring about equity in the agricultural sector by:

1. Substantially increase black participation at all levels within agriculture and it’s related components;
2. Redress the imbalances of the past by seeking to substantially an equitably transfer ownership, management and proportionate control of the agricultural resources to the majority of the citizens; and
3. Ensure broader and meaningful black participation within agriculture.
