Female Farmer 2005 Honoured

It is that time of the year again when the Department of Agriculture honours women who leave an indelible mark in the agricultural sector. This year a total of 34 women will be competing for the top honour of Female Farmer of the Year, 2005. The overall winner will walk away with a R65 000 incentives. The Minister of Agriculture and Land Reform Thoko Didiza will confer the honours flanked by the 9 provincial MECs. Northern Cape Premier Dipuo Peters will also be in attendance including a range of luminaries from the agricultural sector and other walks of life.

Since the inception of the Awards in 1999, the winners have gone on to higher levels in this male-dominated sector. The 2004 Female Farmer of the Year, Ms Thamsanqa Zimu, from KwaZulu-Natal walked away with the 2005 Shoprite Checkers SABC2 Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

As in the previous years, the nominations take place in four different categories:

  • Top Producer for Export Markets
  • Top Producer for National Markets
  • Top Producer for Informal Markets
  • Top Producer for Household Use

Over 600 invitees will grace the award ceremony that is to be held at Kimberley’s 3 SA Infantry Battalion this Saturday, 27 August 2005. This august event of Women’s Month is being celebrated with the theme “Agricultural Intercultural Dialogue.” ABSA, Total SA, the Land Bank, Onderstepoort Biological Products Limited and Farmers Weekly sponsor the event.
