SOUTH AFRICA’S ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIANS MEETS IN KIMBERLEY

Over 150 of South Africa’s animal health technicians, the force that is often at the forefront in times of animal disease outbreaks, will be holding intensive deliberations on matters affecting their profession in their 7th Animal Health Technicians Congress which gets underway tomorrow 18 September, ending Wednesday 20th. Chairperson of the Northern Cape Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Land Reform, MPL Dawid Rooi will deliver the keynote address to the Congress on behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Administration.

Key-discussion documents are to be presented by representatives of the Northern Cape’s Department of Agriculture and Land Reform which is co-hosting the Congress with the Association for Animal Health Technicians. The Northern Cape is hosting the Congress at a time in which animal health technicians have achieved major victories such as being registered as a Para-Veterinary Professionals with the South African Veterinary Council.

The nature of the profession has drastically changed from the time Animal Health Technicians were called stock inspectors. The South African government is estimated to have spend millions of rands on disease outbreaks and control measures on animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease, avian influenza and classical swine fever. The animal health technicians are among key players in areas of roadblocks during inspections, culling diseased animals, vaccinations and on-going surveillance.
